COVID-19 Update

Dear Agua Viva Family,

We can’t thank you enough for your prayers and support during these uncertain times. The purpose of this letter is to update you on the situation in Guatemala and at Agua Viva.

From the beginning, the Guatemalan government took immediate and decisive steps to keep the country safe. Nevertheless, Guatemala currently has 87 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, and several of the newest cases are in a town about 15 minutes away from Agua Viva.

Knowing that poverty and a lack of access to healthcare has the potential to result in an enormous death toll for Guatemalans, the government continues to implement contact tracing and quarantine measures to halt the spread of the virus. The country shut down schools on March 16 and has issued shelter-in-place orders for non-essential workers. The military is enforcing a curfew, and travel between districts is closed for Holy Week. There’s no clear indication of when the government will lift these restrictions.

Our directors, teachers, and staff are working together to develop new and creative ways to reach out to our students and their families because many have no access to internet, and in some cases, no electricity either. Agua Viva’s teachers immediately rose to the task, uploading lessons and study ideas for the students on our school’s Facebook page. Many have smartphones, allowing us to reach at least 30% of our students. Our staff members are working to create a student/parent database online so we can contact as many families as possible to make sure they’re safe and have an opportunity to share their prayer needs. Pastor David and his small church plant in the Colonia are providing food to needy families.

Because of your faithful support, we were able to pay all of our employees for the month of March, even with the loss of income from student tuitions. From the bottom of our hearts, everyone on staff at Agua Viva wants to say thank you! Their paychecks have enable them to support their homes and their extended families during this challenging season.

We’d also like to ask for your continued support in the difficult months ahead, and if you’re able to make an extra gift of $20, $50, or $100 to our general fund, it would be a great blessing to our ministry

Thank you for being a part of the Agua Viva family! We can feel your prayers, which God is using to fill us with hope and peace in an uncertain time. Please know our staff and students are praying for you as well. If you’d like to send us a specific prayer request, please email misi@aguavivaschool.org so our staff and students can pray more specifically for you.

Sincerely,
AGUA VIVA
