Renewed Mission

Since the closing of the children’s home in 2019, followed by the pandemic years, I imagine many of you have wondered, What exactly is happening at Agua Viva? Perhaps even more so after the sad passing of Seño Evy, who led this ministry for over 20 years, and the leadership changes that followed. Today, I want to take a few minutes to share with you what God is doing here.

It’s true, the past few years have not been easy, and many things have changed in a short amount of time. However, one thing remains the same: we are dedicated to serving the at-risk children and youth of Guatemala. Our community school now serves over 330 students most of whom attend on scholarship. Less than half of them attend church regularly, and many of those who do still don’t fully understand their need for Christ.

In a community marked by poverty, crime, and violence in homes, the urgency to share the Gospel has led us to embrace our new mission statement:

As we move forward with this renewed mission, we’ve taken some significant steps in how we work. While we’ve always had Bible classes for our students, we’ve now introduced a program that includes daily Bible reading, prayer, scripture memorization, and a new curriculum that connects the entire story of the Bible to God’s redemptive plan.

We are also discipling our staff, encouraging one another to cultivate hearts passionate about connecting biblical truths to everything we teach at Agua Viva, and enjoying the beauty of God’s grace through the Gospel together.

Check out our new mission through our new promo video.

We feel so blessed to see God’s hand over this renewed mission. For 2025, nearly every grade is full, and most even have waiting lists… the potential for continued growth is huge and we also want to focus on adding mentorship through after school programs and parent classes.

The mission is simple, but the work is complex. There are so many needs in our community, but we know that the greatest need of every human being is to know Jesus. We trust fully that this work, which God has begun, will be strengthened and sustained over time, just as He has done until now.

We Need Your Help!

We look to the future with hope and countless opportunities to plant seeds and see fruit. However, over the past few years, we’ve lost a considerable portion of the support that sustained Agua Viva for so long, and the pandemic forced us to use up our savings. We know that rebuilding this base of support will take time, but we trust that God will touch hearts to embrace this renewed mission. If you feel called to be part of this effort, we invite you to consider making a year-end donation or joining our sponsorship program. Join us in aticipation of the work the Lord will do here in our community through the lives of our students and staff.

Blessed to be a part of the Agua Viva family,

Misi Schlax
